INTRODUCTION: Hello! I made this carrd to explain why Yumary (yumeko x mary) isn't toxic
I am going to explain their relationship and development but first of all i want to deny all the misinformation in yumary.carrd.co1) Mary doesn't like the housepet system while Yumeko doesn't care-What does that have to do with the ship? Yumeko doesn't care because it's the rules. It's not like she supports it or anything, also in the chapters where she helps Nanami Tsubomi it's shown that she doesn't like it, because Nanami did nothing wrong but she did support it when it came to the guy who tried to sexually assault her. And once again, that doesn't have anything to do with the ship. Mary is shipped with many people who support the housepet system because most Kakegurui characters are like that except for Mary, it's the point of her character and it was proven in many ways, another example is her being poor. Also, Mary at first enjoyed the housepet system but Yumeko changed Mary's mind, I will explain this later in another point2) Mary was happier in the Twin spin offyeah, she doesn't look that happy in the main manga because she lost all of her friends and Tsuzura who was the most important person to her. End of story, Yumeko doesn't have anything to do with it.3) Yumeko doesn't care about others and only cares about gamblingfirst, mary used to think that but yumeko proved her wrong later. because mary thought it ONCE before they came friends and their development doesnt mean its true, plus she never gambles for her own sake. second, that was proven wrong MANY TIMES!!! I recommend u reading this: YUMEKO ANALYSIS TLDR: Yumeko is canonically empathetic, and Mary admits that she knows that Yumeko cares for her and respected her the whole time.

4) Yumeko is a bad person because she's mentally ill and doesn't care about her sisterIf u think "mentally ill = bad person" then i'm sorry, but you're ableist and you are the bad person. Mentally ill people can be in a healthy relationship especially when the only "bad" part of her its because the momobamis killed her family. She cares about her sister and she IS closed off about her problems and private life because we didn't get her development yet (november 2021) if she didn't care about her sister then she wouldn't be gambling to help her and paying everything for her. Yumeko said "I never gamble for my own sake" it was shown that she gambled to help Mary, Ryota, and Nanami but it could probably mean her sister too. Remember that Kirari killed the Jabami family and Ririka tried to kill Yumeko once, so they aren't mentally OK either and yet people ship them with other characters without saying anything. No one in Kakegurui is good mentally5) Mary hates being humiliated and Yumeko made her feel that wayThat is the main point of their development! Especially for Mary's character (without yumeko and tsuzura mary wouldn't have development)
Mary was bullied in Kakegurui twin (Connection between KKG TWIN and Yumary here, please read it's important to understand this) by all her classmates and set up by Kokoro, everyone humiliated her because she lost her first gambles. When Yumeko came and gambled with Mary, she lost and her classmates were mean to her AGAIN. Miss Saotome herself said that she didn't care about anything else, not even the money, she was worried because her classmates were humiliating her At first she thought that Yumeko was doing it too, until they became friends in the gamble with Nanami and that guy, Yumeko showed Mary her true self again, the Mary who hates the housepet system and doesn't let anyone think that she's inferior to others. Even though that happened, Mary wasn't fully convinced, Mary is canonically insecure about what Yumeko thinks of her because Mary seed her as a friend(or girlfriend ?/joke) and she was worried of Yumeko seeing her as an enemy HOWEVER Yumeko sees Mary as a friend too, and an equal. Basically Yumeko appreciates Mary's talent and intelligence to gamble and recognizes her as someone who isn't inferior and an equal. All of this can be read in the Kakegurui manga, the "Yumary equals gamble" arc (? idk the name but its around chapters 70-75

im not saying any of these ships are toxic, its just that mary has anger issues and yells at everyone

6) Yumeko sexually assaulted Mary and Mary is uncomfortable around herAaah this take is tiring
Imagine saying a character is a SEXUAL ASSAULTER BECAUSE SHE'S CLINGY (it's kinda funny that people always say this to canon sapphic characters who are clingy with girls ... weirdos) She never S/Ad Mary canonically, in the anime which is NOT canon (Another example of the anime not being canon is the existence of Rei Batsubami and that Homura, the author didn't make it and said it was only for fanservice) she grabbed Mary's chest while hugging her, i'm not defending it because it's not okay but it's not canon! the anime is only there for fanservice purposes, in the manga she gave Mary a completely normal hug.
But, some people also use as proof when Yumeko is around her and Mary tells her to get off. Mary does that with EVERYONE she isn't a touchy person, This is Mary with other characters, also, Yumeko never forces Mary to accept her hugs or whatever
Something important is that Mary is a tsundere, okay? anddd that after the YuMary equals gamble Mary seems so much more comfortable with Yumeko since she stopped being so childish, everyone describes Mary as childish for her tsundere personality. That's why even if she acts angry at Yumeko she later says that doesn't dislike when she's clingy and gives her headpats [ADDED] The Kakegurui novel has been translated and it says many things. 1) Mary actually likes when Yumeko hugs her 2) Mary accepts it was her fault on their first gamble and not Yumeko's.

7) Yumeko isn't similar to Tsuzura while Ririka isWHAT?! FOR A HEALTHY MARY SHIP THE CHARACTER HAS TO BE SIMILAR TO TSUZURA? that makes NO sense😭 but even if it doesn't Yumeko and Tsuzura are very similar, im not denying that Ririka and Tsuzura are similar but Yumeko also is. There are more panels and proof that they are similar (for example that they play the same role in Mary's character, have the same promise with her which is mary becoming president, they are both cheerful, yumeko is literally an extroverted tsuzura djskfj) but this is an edit that shows the similarities between Tsuzura and Yumeko click here8) Yumeko and Mary only share time together when they gambleMAYBE JUST MAYBE BECAUSE ITS A GAMBLING MANGA but they still share time together outside that, in Kakegurui AI it was confirmed that Mary, Ryota and Yumeko are always spending time together and having lunch. Yumeko also got Yumemi's autograph for Mary, what i'm trying to say is that they do other things in their friend group (A.K.A Yumesquad: Mary, Ryota, Yumeko, Itsuki) that don't involve gambling. It's still important for them to gamble because Yumeko communicates through gambling, it's the best way to express her feelings and the way Yumary became a healthy ship. Every female Kakegurui character exists for fanservice purposes, ships too, in a interview Homura admits that he does "shippy" scenes between female characters because he knows it attracts people and called it fanservice, soo it doesn't have to do with anything, many canon ships in other media are there for fanservice too and even Kirasaya but it doesn't mean you shouldn't ship them10) Mary said she regrets getting involved with YumekoI won't deny this happened, the problem is that it's taken out of context since she thought this only in the FIRST CHAPTER OF THE MANGA don't forget they were enemies at first. Explanation: In their first gamble together Mary lost to Yumeko and was humiliated etc etc I explained this in other points but this was brought up again in the YuMary equals arc because they were showing how Yumary's relationship changed, so yeah that was a thought Mary had in the first chapter but then later in the Yumemi/Yumeko arc she also had A REALLY GAY THOUGHT OF IDOL YUMEKO AND MARY WAS BLUSHING that was also brought up again, and many others that were stuff like mary worrying for yumeko etc. everyone took that panel out of context, Mary doesn't hate Yumeko that's why they are friends for a reason

11) Yumeko stops Mary from having development and she'd ruin her character"Yumeko genuinely needs help and not to be shipped with Mary because.. she’d make Marys arc worse rather than build her up" That's a line I saw in the other carrd explaining how Yumary is "toxic" and instead of getting mad I LAUGHED because it's obvious that y'all don't understand Yumeko and Mary's characters. To make everything easier: Without Yumeko Mary wouldn't have development (also Mary is the character with most development in Kakegurui she literally gets all the development so stop acting like she doesn't) I will explain here how Yumeko is an important character to Mary's development (original thread made by higurashmei on twitter)
So, bringing up Tsuzura again. Mary is obviously very affected by her possible death in the worst case or her losing to the housepet system but in Twin Mary was also really really against the housepet system unlike in the first chapters of Kakegurui Gambler, the main manga, we can see Mary having Ryota as a pet and enjoying the system since she's a really good gambler. As I said before, imagine how affected Mary is by all the Tsuzura/Yukimi etc situation (on twin) She has attitudes contrary to those who she believed in KKG TWIN (for example her being super mean and even a slight bully especially to the pets who lost to the system) And that's where Yumeko acts an important role. When she comes to Hyakkou she has her first gamble with Mary and Yumeko wins, Mary wasn't used to losing so she felt the housepet system once again and -kinda- started to realize how bad it is, later they gamble together to pay their debts and be free from the housepet system. That's when Yumeko (without realising) slowly brought the "Real" Saotome from twin, The Saotome who is against the housepet system, the fair Saotome, the Mary Saotome who fights for what she believes in. Yumeko's arrival changed Mary, if it wasn't for that gamble in which Mary loses to her, she would be lost in herself doing things against what she believed in twin when she was with all of her new and childhood friends way more happier than when she lost them. Her development is way more deep than just "losing to the protagonist".
In that scene, when the "real" Mary was back thanks to Yumeko we can see her holding Tsuzura's hairpin. She's decided to end the housepet system and beat the president of the student council Kirari Momobami, exactly to the Saotome that we saw in Kakegurui Twin. Andd now thanks to Mary we got at least a little bit of Yumeko's development 🥺 (finally) and here we can see her more comfortable with Yumeko ❣️

If it weren't for Yumeko Mary wouldn't enjoy gambling, now she seems happier with it and comfortable. This is really important because Mary will have to gamble a lot in order to become president and she can't do that if she hates gambling. She's back to what she used to be, but now more mature and decided ( yeah Mary used to be VERY CHILDISH FJSJFJH) her objective is to become president of the student council and we know that it's Yumeko who pushed this choice.12) Mary said that her type in guys is guys who are honest, but Yumeko lies😭😭😭 wtf??? Yumeko lies to win in gambles WDYM mary does that too, and Yumeko isn't even a guy she's a girl. You can like some things in boys that u don't really care about them in girls and the other way too. Also, my type is honest people as well but it doesn't mean that i won't date someone who tells lies???!! this argument doesn't make sense lmao yumeko is honest too but she cheats in gambles and thats ok bc everyone does that13) The yumary "kiss"
I can see why people don't like this (me either) since Yumeko did it without permission and Mary got mad. But Kakegurui Yorozu isn't canon, not even official. Homura just approved it to be sold but he doesn't know anything about it. If it were official then many things would be different according to Yorozu. Same with kari, is not official just a parody of the charactersThat's all! Thanks for reading. Yumary is an amazing ship with a lot of development including the characters too. Yumary development and how their relationship became so much healthier and that they understand each other nowit all starts with mary being worried about what yumeko thinks of her, mary worried about her and considers yumeko as a friend, but does yumeko thinks the same of mary? mary WANTS yumeko to consider her an equal

because she doesn't know yet that yumeko also worries about her and considers her a friend. they trust each other, yumeko trusts mary a lot and she has said it but not in front of her, they both want to know more about each other. not to mention that their fingers are intertwined in multiple panels. holding hands that way means that you want to learn more about that person, it also seems that yumeko doesn't know how to express her feelings, thats why this scene happens and mary realises that yumeko cares about her (and mary blushed lol)
why did yumeko wanted to gamble with her so much??? was it because she wanted mary to know that she considers her an equal and a friend?
so ya basically yumeko feels the same way about mary and mary was worried of nothinggg.Also what i love about them the most is the fact that Yumeko and Tsuzura (Mary's first love) are so similar that they have the same promise. Helping Mary to become president. Both Tsuzura and Yumeko gave Mary amazing development and showed her that they would never humiliate her. Their development was amazing because it went from "ahaha childish tsundere Mary who doesnt get yumeko the annoying gambler" to "We can finally understand each other and even if some day we are rivals in a gamble it would be the nicest gamble because I know it's with you" LIKE !?#!?$&! Now it's Mary's turn to give Yumeko more development because she doesn't have much and all she has is development in her relationship with Mary (im glad that it happens tho-)some other stuff is that yumeko gave her life for mary and mary gave her life for yumeko, and yes this is canon. We can see Mary's both in anime and manga while yumeko's on the live action, where she stopped gambling in order to save Mary's life (Russian Roulette the movie) Yumeko is used as a target for Mary because the other students know how deeply they care for each other, the same thing applies to Mary
